I'm boycotting social media...
In January of 2021, Big Tech acted in unison to ban a sitting president. That wasn’t the first straw, but that was the last straw for me. I decided then that I would leave all the platforms that banned him. I was tired of the censorship and one sided enforcement of their terms of service. True art cannot exist without freedom of expression.
Over the next few months I did a lot of research looking into alternatives. I did find some alternatives, but it also made me realize that I’m better off using email, and my own website.
When you think about it, everything about social media is a big scam. You create content, give up your data, your privacy, and advertise those websites to everyone constantly. All those things have value, and many companies pay big money for them, yet big tech has convinced us to give them up for free in exchange for fake popularity while they are making billions. “Likes” don’t actually equate to anything meaningful in the real world, but the money they are making sure does.
Big tech, marketing gurus, and the major labels have most musicians spinning their wheels getting nowhere while they are raking in the cash. Every music marketing “expert” out there is telling musicians to spend all their time posting, planning posts, strategizing effective posts, taking photos, making videos, and creating content nonstop for free so that you can become “popular” on social media. Then maybe you can get streams on Spotify, and other streaming platforms, where you make less than $0.001 per stream. As a customer, unless you are listening to 10,000 songs a month, or 500 hours of music (at 3 min/song), the numbers don’t add up. Musicians are flat out getting ripped off while Spotify is getting filthy rich. And all the “experts” are telling us to let the music industry do this to us, that our music isn’t worth anything, and generally trying to devalue us any way they can.
I realize we don’t live in a black and white world. Compromises need to be made. You need to meet people where they are. And it’s never easy going against the grain of what’s popular, even if what’s popular isn’t right. But change needs to start somewhere…
If you want to tell big tech that they don’t own us, use email. Not just for me, but any artist or business. Don’t make artists, or businesses have to pay big tech to get the word out!
